הסכם השלום בין ישראל למצרים‎, Heskem HaShalom Bein Yisrael LeMitzrayim) was signed in Washington, DC on 26 March 1979, following the 1978 Camp David Accords. The main features of the treaty were the mutual recognition of each country by the other, the cessation of the state of war that had existed since the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, and the complete withdrawal by Israel of its armed forces and civilians from the rest of the Sinai Peninsula which Israel had captured during the Six-Day War in 1967. The agreement also provided for the free passage of Israeli ships through the Suez Canal and recognition of the Strait of Tiran, the Gulf of Aqaba and the Taba – Rafah straits as international waterways.(From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

Yes, it over 30 years that Israel and Egypt are in a status of peace, is that the kind of peace  Anuhar Sahadad and Menachem Begin was hoping to see ? We call it a “cold peace“, is that good or bad for Israel or Egypt ?

At the time the peace accord was signed, I thought that Israel accomplished a 30 years old dream and by giving up so much we are going to see a Europe type of peace meaning open borders, open trade, using and developing natural sources, mass of tourism both ways and the most important more security for the people of Israel.

In actuality there is no tourism, only the Israelis are curios to see and visit the sites that the “Sons Of Israel” spent 400 years in slavery to the Egyptian kingdom “the Parauns” , to see the miracle of the pyramids and visit Egypt as a tourist and not as a warrior. Very little trade relation, not sharing any technologies that no doubt they might benefit from the Israelis development in all means of life. Israeli leader visited endless time Egypt meet with the Arab leaders but no one of them ever visited Israel. Terrorists was smuggling weapons, explosives, missiles and all kind of killing inventory. Israelis was killed in Sinai at Taba hotel in a terror attack that could be prevented if the Egyptian authorities would do some effort. The coral reefs that I used to scuba dive and was declared by Israel as a preserved area was demolished by the Arabs with a very efficient way of fishing… throwing Granads into the water and destroying the beauty of the Red Sea.

I can go on and on.. but Israel gained from this peace accord economically by reducing the need of the quantity of army and soldiers  along the border with Egypt, meaning no need to call solders in the reserve to active duty and let more Israelis at work, or at school.

President Mubarak is a strong leader and have a lot of influence on the Arab world and he understand very well the benefit living in peace but at the same time he is dealing with fundamentalist Muslim groups like the “the Muslim Brotherhood” that assassinated the previous president, Anuar Sadat, and he need to do an effort to satisfy them all, and at the same time to protect the peace treaty with Israel.

I have no doubt that Israel is using his strong personality, as a communicator with the other Arab countries, as a mediator to resolve issues with the PLO and the Hamas and he beleave as well as Israel that problems can be resolved by negotiation and not by power.

My fear is that, as happened before in Iran for example, at the Shah time, the democracy have been changed over night when Hachmadinajad took over the country when the  fundamentalist Muslims come in power.   Israel have to work very hard to build strong foundation in the relationship with Egypt and open more opportunities the rest of the Arab world. convince them that Israel is looking to live in peace with the neighbors and creat a new mideast.
